The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), in Anambra state has said members of the caretaker committee constituted at the party’s botched convention in Port Harcourt were people with integrity.

Speaking with newsmen in Awka, Chuks Okoye, the secretary of the Chris Uba faction of PDP in the state said the caretaker committee led by Senator Ahmed Makarfi saved the party from disintegration, Vanguard reports.

According to him, many interest groups would have dumped the party if the matter was not handled carefully.

He said members of the caretaker committee, which also had Senator Ndii Obi as secretary would consider the interest of the party first.

The PDP chieftain said: “What we are suffering in Anambra is a case where some people want to bend the rules, but we believe that the committee will look at the Anambra case dispassionately and call a spade a spade, no matter who is involved.

“The national caretaker committee should do things right as this is one way of bringing back justice and confidence to the party and its members in the state.”

Okoye said the committee’s first task should be to reconcile the warring factions in the various states to make PDP formidable across the country.

He urged the Makarfi-led committee to pay special attention to the Anambra state branch of the party, where gross injustice had been perpetrated for long.

The PDP has not remained the same after it lost the 2015 general elections. A number of its members have defected to other parties while those remaining are divided. Its May 21 national convention did not help matters as it ended up in controversy.

The party sacked its national chairman, Ali Modu Sherriff and constituted a caretaker committee, appointing a former governor of Kaduna state, Ahmed Makarfi as acting chairman. However, Sheriff insists that he remains the chairman of the party. On Tuesday, May 24, , ordering Sheriff to continue serving as the PDP’s chairman.

That same day, a Federal High Court sitting in Port Harcourt, the Rivers state capital of the PDP.
