Imam Husain is a grandson of the Prophet Mohammed and a seventh-century Islamic leader who fought for social justice.

But this year a mass march was designed to condemn terrorism following  and worldwide.

Organiser of the event Waqar Haider said: “This year we had hundreds of placards which were basically saying ‘no’ to terrorism and ‘no’ to Isis. A very direct message. For us it was a controversial move to go political. Normally we don’t mix politics with mourning. However with what’s happened recently, we thought we had to make sure we as a community totally disassociate ourselves with what’s happening elsewhere in the world.”

The demonstartion is considered to be the largest annually organised Islamic event in Europe, which is aimed “to cement a bond of unity and friendship between people of all ages and cultures under the banner of love for the Holy Household.”

Mohammed Al-Sharifi, an activist and volunteer added: “We can still apply the same principles today when we are terrorised by the likes of ISIS. The message applies now more than ever to current issues. We are trying to undo people’s misconceptions about Islam – this a multi-faith event and we are trying to promote universal human values. I’ve never met anyone who is pro-ISIS, 99 per cent of Muslims just want to lead peaceful lives. This is the message we want to get out there.”

However, the organisers believe that the event didn’t get enough media coverage and explain it with stereotyping and prejudice against Islam. The Arbaeen processions take place in other countries, including Iraq, Nigeria and America.
